Insight into the mind of a man who doesn't like where he exists.

This film was a chance for me to explore the inner workings of myself at that particular time in my life. I felt displaced, hateful, anxious to get out. Creating this film helped me come to terms with how I was feeling.

Project 4/4 from Sight & Sound Film Production in the Summer of 2010 at NYU (New York University).

@03:29quite abstract, but it really fits well with the internal chaos of being in the modern world. BTW, congrats on being picked to voice Daroga for Requiem Mask

very nice. but it looks funny when main guy smirks.. as he want to laugh. but he's controlling himself :D

that is the biggest minus in this short film. but everything else is not bad. seen something very similar in various exhibitions.. so i can't say that this video hypnotized me or amazed (very much). but it's quite good!

@03:28Congratulations, Jeff on the Daily Deviation! That's a big deal (especially for a film submission!). I like it, too. As usual, the music you made is good and atmospheric. I like the double-exposure trick at the end. I can also relate to the feeling this movie communicates. We've been trained to be lonely in a city of millions, haven't we?

@03:28I loved it!
When the lovely edited voice began to say, "You are afraid." I expected her to say something like "of death." I love things that get into that state of mind. To me the voice became to seem like a conscience, but then she said, "of finding yourself," and wiped away the existensial suggestions I was clinging too--she no longer seemed like a conscience. I thought through it more, then saw your little caption. Is the voice the super ego, then? Does "finding himself" refer to the id or ego in this case? Are you saying that he has become so overdriven with the calculating ego that he can no longer cling to the basic drive to live and exist the way the id does? In the end, your film made me think a lot more than expected, so thank you very much for creating it! ^^

I'm really glad you liked and thank you for the thoughtful response.

In response to your questions, I would say that the character, in finding himself, is referring to the id. He has become overwhelmed and essentially drives away the ego. When he is confronted by the voice, however, the ego has to explain why the id feels the way it does. In regards to the voice, I would still say that it involves the ego but I see where your thinking comes from. The voice is trying to assess the id's feelings critically.

I would love to continue a conversation on this if you wish.

You are saying that he is scared of confronting his id, but at the same time he has driven away his ego? So hasn't he become closer to his id already?
And the voice is his ego--but not his super-ego-- trying to rationally assess the id? So if he has driven the ego away...why is he still dealing with it?
:confused:
So the id is the part of him that detests his reality? Why? I've always seen the id as something that is simply pure instinct,not capable of having reasoned distaste.

I was thinking more he is acting from the id. His ideal is to escape from the place but he's not rationalizing it until he's confronted about it.

I have a very limited knowledge regarding psychology, but, if I'm incorrect please tell me, the voice (which upon thinking fits your statement regarding the super-ego better) brings out the ego and forces it to explain the way the id is feeling.
